当体内抑郁症的无形剧痛升级到不堪忍受的水平，她就会自我了断，如同被困在起火高楼里的人最终会从窗口跳下一样。请别误解从燃烧的窗户纵身一跃的人。他们对从极高处坠落的恐惧，仍然跟站在同样窗口举目眺望、欣赏风景的你我没什么不同。就是说，对坠落的恐惧是恒定不变的。

华莱士写过不少关于抑郁症的内容，他本人也深受重度抑郁症困扰。

最终他在2008年选择结束了自己的生命。
